Hello! My name is Dr. Steven Curtis, I am the founder of EyeLux Integrations, the company that provides the equipment, training, and support for optometrists to add OMST to their optometry practice. After more than a decade of witnessing the power of the Sensory Learning Program, I became determined to enhance this unique multisensory training and make it more readily available for patients across the globe.

This program was like watching syntonics on steroids. The improved outcomes of my vision therapy/rehabilitation patients additionally moved me to do two things. I committed to publish research on this type of modality, and upgrade its technology for today’s world. After you read the patient testimonials, you’ll further understand my passion to make this available to as many as possible. What is the success rate? Nine of ten report positive gains!

Fact: we are born with single sensory neural network capability. However, beginning at birth, a child’s brain gradually learns/acquires multi-neuronal processing SUBCORTICALLY. This is the brains very FIRST stage of learning and it must be successful in order for a child to be ready to attend and participate in eventual CORTICAL-based learning.

OMST is successful at facilitating a child’s self-development of multi-sensory processing which is often delayed in autism, ADHD, behavioral, general learning difficulties, and more.

Also, OMST helps TBI patients regain efficiency in their multi-sensory pathways after having been compromised as a result of the head injury. Our research on the use of OMST with post concussion syndrome patients is convincing!

How does this apply to concussion?

Concussion can cause disruption of the neuro-pathways that provide multi-sensory processing. Many of the persistent symptoms associated with mTBI are a result of this disruption.

OMST helps the concussed patient relearn the subconscious skill of multi-sensory filtering through a repetitive, non-cognitive, safe, and controlled protocol.

Concussion

OMST is a rehabilitation protocol using a unique subconscious rehabilitation (simultaneous application of optometric phototherapy, vestibular stimulation, auditory stimulation, and somatosensory input combined with conscious rehabilitation (optometric vision therapy). This synergistic paradigm helps a concussed brain return to doing its job…think and direct actions. Your patient will then engage much better in further traditional top-down therapy activities.

How is this done?

Under controlled and safe clinical conditions, this intense application of foundational therapy guides the re-establishment of sensory regulation with the end result being enhanced filtering, fine-tuning, and prioritizing of sensory information coming into the brain from the environment. A concussed brain can lose efficiency of this process causing the patient to be overwhelmed by “normal” surroundings. OMST is designed to help the concussed patient accelerate their optometric and overall rehabilitation.

The OMST process involves 12 consecutive days in the clinic, followed by 18 days of home based therapy, and if needed, in-office booster sessions determined individually for each participant. Warning: some participants experience neuro-retracing during the OMST process. A retracing is the re-experiencing or re-awakening of past symptoms and dysfunctions, which may include, without limitation: pain, discomfort, imbalance, behavioral changes, and the re-occurrence of past thoughts, memories, feelings or emotions.

Developmental and learning delays are often a result of a child not having optimal multi-sensory processing skills. OMST helps a child learn the subconscious skill of multi-sensory modulation.

Child’s Development

OMST has also been shown to be very effective clinically in assisting children (non concussion based) overcome delays in sensory processing disorders often associated with ADHD, anxiety, or autistic based delays. OMST is designed to help these children be more calm and confident in their environment (both new and familiar) and therefore more fully engage in life activities. This includes school, home, social encounters, tutoring, and optometric vision therapy.

...this type of therapy proves effective irrespective of the age of the client, and across a wide spectrum of chronic developmental delays, brain damage, and behavioral disorders.
